Philip Hesleton has continued his series of books on major historical figures in paganism with this excellent biography on Doreen Valiente. The book covers her entire life and concludes with the impact of her legacy. I am fortunate enough to have met Doreen myself on two occasions, and talked to her several times on the phone, and I can confirm the impression of her given in the book is accurate.
My favourite chapters are those concerning her entering the Craft, and her fascinating interactions with famous people from Wiccan and Pagan history, I found the coverage of the period after she parted with Gerald particularly interesting. Ronald Hutton calls Doreen Valiente “The greatest single female figure in the modern British history of Witchcraft”, and this book shows why. You will learn how she helped shape not only Wicca but the entire Pagan community, and was a more mature influence than many of her male contemporaries including Gerald. This is not only a book every pagan should read, it should be a book every pagan wants to read, very highly recommended.
